Cascades Brass Quintet
Vancouver-based Cascades Brass Quintet plays GF Handel, Scott Joplin, Claude Debussy, JS Bach, Duke Ellington, John Williams and Johannes Brahms (and everything else in between). In 2006, the ensemble won the top brass prize at the prestigious Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, and recorded for CBC Radio 2 shortly after. The polished selections of these five classically-trained brass musicians entertain with utmost professionalism!

Malcolm Aiken TRUMPET
Malcolm Aiken is a rising performer, band leader and music educator based in Vancouver. He is involved in an eclectic mix of innovative projects and collaborations and is fluent in a variety of musical styles and traditions including jazz, Afro-Cuban, and contemporary classical music.  Malcolm recently completed his formal training (Masters of Music degree) at the University of British Columbia, where in 2005 his work on Afro-Cuban music won him the prestigious Canadian Graduate Scholarship Award from the Canadian Council. Malcolm’s musical endeavours began at age 8 with the violin, but he soon switched to the trumpet upon hearing his first Louis Armstrong record. He started playing professionally while still in high school, studied in New York, San Francisco and at the Banff Centre, and completed his formal music training with a Master's degree from the University of British Columbia. Having shared the stage with the likes of Chucho Valdez, Hugh Fraser and Bubi Chen, Malcolm has also performed for world leaders such as the Dalai Lama, Reverend Desmond Tutu and Sharin Abadi. Based on the west coast, Malcolm has performed throughout Canada, the US, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Germany, Holland and the UK.

Nick Anderson  HORN
Since moving to Vancouver in 2003 from his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nick has been active as both a performer and educator. After receiving his Bachelors of Music in Horn Performance from the University of British Columbia in 2007, Nick went on to complete his Masters of Music degree in 2009. Nick has studied with Dennis Heeter and Richard Mingus, and currently studies with Ben Kinsman of the Vancouver Symphony. He has also performed in the master classes of Larry Vine, Andrew Clark, James Sommerville, and Fergus McWilliam. He has performed as principle horn with the UBC Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, as well as served on the faculty of the UBC Summer Music Institute and the Whistler Music Festival.  Nick currently plays with the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra is active as a chamber musician.  He is a session musician with various pop, folk, and rock acts, heard on releases by E.S.L., Corbin Murdoch and the Nautical Miles, Reed Foehl, and Fanshaw.


Al Cannon TRUMPET
Alexander Cannon, a committed advocate of the Arts and new music, is currently a candidate of the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in trumpet performance at the University of British Columbia. He was a recipient of the highly competitive University Graduate Fellowship in 2006 and 2008. Al has performed many international cities including Dallas TX, Las Vegas NV, New York NY, Dublin Ireland, Bangkok Thailand, Taipei Taiwan, Hong Kong China,  and Québec City, Montréal, and Toronto Canada. Al was Acting Principal Trumpet with the Prince George Symphony from 2007-2009, and is an extra trumpet with the Vancouver Symphony.  He has recorded with classical and indie rock ensembles for CBC Radio 2 and 3, and frequently performs both Baroque-era and avant-garde music at Vancouver-area churches.  Al maintains an active schedule as a freelance performer, educator, and brass arranger.
